Something we have talked about on the garden visits is planning a practical garden. A garden that is adapted to the place it is located and to the person who takes care of it. One thing to think about when it comes to your garden is which needs and desires<\/strong> that exist. How do you want to use your garden and what is reasonable in your own life situation, right now? You may want to grow a lot or a little, vegetables or flowers or both, large amounts of basic products or a smaller amount of everyday luxuries, mostly perennials or mostly annuals, straight rows or a structured chaos.... If you find your own level and focus on growing, it is easier to have a reasonable workload and enjoy your garden. It can take time to try your hand at it and a garden is a living place that changes over time, just like the grower himself. Be patient and let it grow!<\/p>\n

Something else to think about is where you move<\/strong> in the garden. In permaculture there is the concept zones<\/em>, which is about placing the most demanding areas where you are often naturally and then less demanding areas further away, where you are less often. In the past, the garden plots were often located at the far end of the garden, which required more routine and discipline to manage than a plot you see every day. Maybe the plots should be located on the way to the parking lot, near the chicken coop or right outside the door? In the same way, it is good to have the tools you use easily accessible. Quite simply curl yourself up and make it easier to take care of your garden.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Something else to take into account is the conditions of the place<\/strong>. Where does the sun shine? How does it blow? Where is it extra dry or extra humid? As a rule, vegetables, fruit and berries want a sunny and pleasant place to grow. It is possible to improve the microclimate by, for example, planting windbreaks in the form of bushes or placing the crops near heat-collecting stones. It is also good to know what kind of soil you have, so that you can improve the soil correctly and plant the right plant in the right place. Find out what the perennials want and how the vegetables want to grow \u2013 it is easier to work with nature than against it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sometimes it may be justified to take down trees that provide shade and absorb water and nutrients, but think twice first. Trees take a long time to grow, they provide shade that can be more than much needed at times, they bind carbon dioxide, create a protected microclimate, are home to many insects and contribute to diversity.<\/p>\n

There may be an advantage in consolidating the crops into one or two locations, to make management easier. But there is also a point in having slightly different growing environments since we cannot control the weather \u2013 a hot and dry summer provides different conditions than a wet and cold one.<\/p>\n

Don't forget to plan irrigation<\/strong> already now \u2013 the best thing is often if you can collect and use rainwater from the roofs, preferably using height differences and natural pressure, which can affect the situation on the land. (There will be more about irrigation in a later post)<\/p>\n

In addition to the climate of the place, you can look at what opportunities exist<\/strong>\u00a0and think about how to create a cycle<\/strong>. What resources are available? A sheep farm can plan its farming differently than someone with domestic chickens, which in turn creates different cycles than someone without animals. The cycle does not only have to include your own garden, but can also include your neighbor or the community where you live. It is better to create land and maintain the agricultural soil with materials that are nearby and may even be classified as waste, than to bring in (and drive away) material from elsewhere. Each location also has its disadvantages and risks<\/strong>. By identifying those that are leaving as early as possible, you can plan for action. This could be about guests that want to eat your crops, such as deer, hares, wild boars or snails (more about killer snails in a later post), or about troublesome night frosts.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Something else that can be good to include already in the planning stage (if you are growing vegetables) is how to achieve the rotation<\/strong>. Most vegetables want to change their growing location every year, although the need is reduced if you use cover crops and have a living, humus-rich soil and co-grow different vegetables. Even the biological<\/strong>diversity<\/strong> is something to think about a little extra. Feel free to mix flowers and vegetables, perennials and annuals. Remember that our pollinators (bumblebees, bees, flower flies, butterflies...) need food all season and water if it's dry. Let it grow a bit wild and have different kinds of organic material in the garden to use as nesting sites. It can be sand in a sunny location, piles of stones, old wood or rice piles, a pond or insect hotels created by ourselves.<\/p>\n
